Nothing Stays Buried

They buried the names behind the mill Beneath the orchard on the hill Drove the stakes into the clay Swore the roots would rot away

Winter stripped the branches clean Rain washed out the dying green But underneath the broken stone Something stirred where nothing grows

I hear it crawling underground I hear it tearing through the stone You can bury what you did But you can't leave it alone!

Nothing stays buried! Nothing stays down! Cut away the branches But the roots are underground!

Nothing stays buried! Nothing dies clean! Every secret that you swallowed Is coming up again!

Old foundation, county line Crooked door and warning sign Floorboards split, the cellar filled With everything they thought they'd killed

Found a picture by the stairs Smiling faces, empty chairs Names were written on the back Like a list of things they couldn't take back

I hear it scratching at the door I hear it coming through the wall You can swear you did no wrong But the ground remembers all!

Nothing stays buried! Nothing stays down! Cut away the branches But the roots are underground!

Nothing stays buried! Nothing dies clean! Every secret that you swallowed Is coming up again!

Dig another hole! Drive another nail! Build another wall! Tell another tale!

Throw another stone! Cover every scar! You can change the names But you can't change what you are!

The ground is splitting! The roots are breaking! The walls are shaking! And something's waking!

Nothing stays buried! Nothing stays down! Cut away the branches But the roots are underground!

Nothing stays buried! Nothing dies clean! Every secret that you swallowed Is coming up again!

Nothing stays buried! Nothing stays down! You can burn the orchard Tear the whole damn place down!

Nothing stays buried! Nothing dies clean! Hide beneath the ashes But the roots are still beneath!

The ground is breaking! The roots are waking! The earth is shaking!

Nothing! Stays! Buried!
